A TREASURE UNDER THE SURFACE

Costa Rica is known worldwide as a synonym of natural beauty due to the incredible aesthetic display found in its extraordinary life forms and the spectacular views offered in its forest, beaches, valleys and mountains.
Costa DevelopersBut at a certain distance below the surface, is located in the Barra Honda National Park a secret treasure, an underground system of caves formed by impressive caverns, deep trenches and underground streams, majestically decorated with sculptures of calcium molded by nature for thousands or even millions of years.

Access to these enigmatic places used to be a privilege reserved for geologists and climbers, but thanks to the park's infrastructure and experienced guides, in Barra Honda anyone in good physical condition can experience descending  to explore this mysterious underground world .
Of the 42 caves in the park, the "Velvet" is the most visited due to the existence of a ladder, built in 2002, and lanyards allowing everyone see this magnificent place. It has a depth of 134.5 meters and a length of 295 meters.
It is located in Guanacaste, 22 kms from the city of Nicoya. It was created in 1974 and consists of 5,600 acres of tropical dry forest. Besides the caves, the park has a gazebo that offers stunning views of the river valleys Tempisque and the Gulf of Nicoya as some of its islands.
At anytime of the year one can see monkeys, deer, raccoons, ocelots, peccary, opossum, *tepescuintle* and anteaters, in addition to an ample variety of birds and plants typical of the dry tropical forests.  With the first lights of the morning, the forests shines with the morning dew and the animals are much more active.  Therefore, arriving early will increase your chances of sighting them.
